Types of laser measuring instruments

13 December 2024

Laser instruments are widely used in modern construction, surveying, and engineering work. Such devices provide highly accurate measurements at high speed. Thanks to technological advancement, almost all laser measuring instruments have become available not only for professionals, but also for home use. Let us tell you about the types of measuring instruments and tools as well as what they are used for.

Laser Measuring Instrument: Working Principle

Laser instruments use a laser beam directed at an object and then reflected back to the device. The time it takes for the beam to reach the target and return allows the distance to be determined with high accuracy.

The main components in all types of measuring instruments are:

  • Emitter: It generates the laser beam directed at an object.
  • Receiver: It captures the reflected beam for analysis.
  • Electronic system: It processes data and calculates the distance or other parameters based on the beam travel time or its phase changes.
There are also phase measurement methods that analyze the change in the phase of a laser beam when it is reflected from an object. These methods provide even greater accuracy and are often used in professional devices.

Device types

The following types of devices are used in professional construction and in everyday life:

  • A laser construction rangefinder is a lightweight and compact device that allows you to measure lengths at significant distances (up to 1500 meters) and it comes with many useful functions. It is widely used in various fields, including engineering surveying, military, navigation, astronomical research, construction, and hunting as well as for household needs. With this device, you can:
    • Accurately measure distances, angles, and speeds.
    • Conduct visual observations with 6x magnification.
    • Take measurements in two modes – single measurement and scanning mode for continuous measurements, which is especially convenient when working with moving objects!
    • The rangefinder also has a flagpole lock function. It helps determine the distance to small targets that can be lost against the general background, such as flags or poles on sports fields.
  • A level is a laser measuring instrument used to construct horizontal, vertical, and inclined lines. Laser levels are used in construction and finishing work. With the help of this device, you can easily set straight lines for laying tiles as well as install partitions or other interior elements.
  • Laser rangefinder (meter) is a compact tool for measuring short and medium distances. The advantage of a laser rangefinder is that it measures quickly and without the need to apply the instrument to the object.
  • Angle meters are used to accurately measure angles and slopes. They are used in construction, engineering, and geodetic work to install structures at the required angle.

Types of laser rangefinders

Laser rangefinder is one of the most popular types of distance measuring devices. Depending on their characteristics and application, they can be:

  • Household. They are small in size, easy to use and suitable for measuring distances in the range of 20m and 50m. Their main advantage is compactness and ease of use as well as their affordable price.
  • Professional devices can measure distances up to 200m or more. They are equipped with additional functions, such as area and volume calculations and memory for storing measurement results. These devices are used at construction sites, in geodesy, and engineering surveys.
  • Modern models of laser rangefinders can be integrated with mobile devices via Bluetooth. They are used by professionals who work with large volumes of data and need the convenience of transferring measurements to a computer.
  • Geodetic laser rangefinders can measure large distances with high accuracy and are used with tacheometers or theodolites. These rangefinders are used for terrain surveying, cartography, and in engineering projects.

All types of modern laser measuring instruments are effective tools for the fast and accurate measurement of distances, angles, and other parameters. Depending on your needs and working conditions, you can choose the right tool for specific tasks.
